BEETHOVEN & BANJOS – CROSS GENRE COLLABORATION

We’ve just returned home from collaborating in the first season of the new cross genre festival – Beethoven & Banjos. Working alongside members of Decoda – Carnegie Hall’s affiliate ensemble, we presented three concerts and three school programs to Upper Peninsula residents. Our week was a completely enriching musical immersion, with daytimes full of rehearsals with our extremely talented cohorts, and evenings scheduled with public concerts and interactive performances at local schools. This year two brand new pieces had their world-premier – a violin/viola duet based on Scandinavian dances by Evan Premo, and a three-part quintet based on Upper Peninsula waters composed by Laurel and Evan Premo. Aside from that, most of the material that we performed had never been heard in it’s current form, from Red Tail Ring songs with new string arrangements, to Beethoven minuets with shimmers of traditional American tunes tucked inside. We’re thrilled to have been part of the first year of this festival, and will continue to support it in future seasons.

EARTHWORK HARVEST GATHERING – SEPT 18-20

11885269_879058578829735_5582312461192103979_nWe’re gearing up for the famed Earthwork Harvest Gathering, the homecoming festival of the Earthwork Music Collective (and de facto meeting of minds for all of Michigan). HG 2015 will feature the best in Michigan music, from longtime staples like Seth Bernard & May Erlewine and Chris Bathgate to newcomers The Northern Fires and Vox Vidorra, from psychedelic jam masters The Macpodz to Breathe Owl Breathe – masters of the minimal jam. The festival will feature several different types of sets by us, a Barn Stage set of RTR music in addition to Michael rocking out with Prine Time (his John Prine tribute brotherhood) and Laurel playing with Micah Ling (folk cellist extraordinaire), a set with Earthwork Women, and Shari Kane & Dave Steele. It’s a festival we look forward to all year, and one we recommend highly. Hope to see you there!

This coming Friday (Dec 1st) we’ll be back on st This coming Friday (Dec 1st) we’ll be back on stage as Red Tail Ring for the first time in nearly 4 years. There are tickets still available (visit @the.alluvion website). Show starts at 7pm. Traverse City, MI.

The past several weeks of rehearsing have been joyous, cathartic, head-scratching, a fantastic hang, and have involved lots of soup. The first couple practices we prioritized the soup, so hopefully that’ll come across at the show. We’ll be playing a few old chestnuts along with unrecorded songs we always liked, and hopefully fit in a few seasonal bangers (deep cuts only).

The concert is part of a weekend series at The Alluvion called Winter Tones. Night 1 will be @laurelpremo & Red Tail Ring. Night 2 is @theantivillains and @breatheowlbreathe . The intentionality of The Alluvion and Matt McCalpin in cultivating the shows has been inspirational. We’re lucky to have such a great venue in Traverse City in which to whisper our wild secrets.

Today @thefretless release their 5th album, a coll Today @thefretless release their 5th album, a collaboration with vocalists called 'Open House'. The final single from the record drops today with the full length - a new arrangement of 'Fall Away Blues,' a song @laurelpremo wrote for Red Tail Ring.

It was an honor to rework this tune with The Fretless. We are both huge fans of what they do, and we've known their group through a lot of years of making music, and have seen each other on different spots on the highway. We're so grateful that they're continuing to create beautiful stuff, and feel lucky that we got to work on something together this season.

Fall Away Blues is about perseverance, fortitude, and was written as a simple pact to make something with life no matter what fate befalls you. It has always felt heavily prophetic to sing, and will continue to be that way, simply because it's a given that you'll be presented hardships in your life, and faced with the decisions of how to move on. If there's ever any medicine needed for these past two years we've all experienced, it is the sentiment of this tune. Thanks to The Fretless for weaving it into smooth medicine today.

A nice event announcement from Laurel: In light of A nice event announcement from Laurel: In light of the cancellation of my clawhammer banjo workshop in Baltimore this weekend, I’m going to offer an online group workshop on Saturday at 1 pm (EST). I hope that this can offer a quality replacement to those who were looking forward to working with me in person, as well as anyone else who would like to join.

This will be a different format than one-on-one lessons for me. In one-on-one’s, there’s sonic feedback between myself and the student. For this group workshop, I’m simply going to live stream my tune teaching and discussion about the tunes from myself to you. I’ll teach in the same way I do in person, and I will try to break things down at an intermediate pace. I’ll have a running discussion board that I’ll check in for a short time with after each segment, and I’ll open up a larger discussion time at the end of the session.
If you’re interested in learning about my perspective on banjo, investigating different tunings, and being introduced to some intermediate fingering and rhythmic techniques, please join me. This is going to be a private stream, not public, so to be able to participate I ask that you either pre-register or register at least ten minutes prior to the class. All that means is, I won’t be able to take on more students once the course starts.

Pre-register anytime leading up to the workshop by sending your payment via PayPal (laurelpremo@gmail.com) or Venmo (@LaurelPremo) and include email address so that I can provide you with the private stream link. For my one-on-one video teaching I use Zoom, but for this group lesson I’ll be using a private youtube livestream so there is no application download or video conference experience necessary for the students. Everyone is welcome, and I aim to make it as easy as possible to participate.
Hi Friends - The Baltimore Old Time Festival sched Hi Friends - The Baltimore Old Time Festival scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled, as a wise and community-concious response to help in our nation's handling of the covid19 pandemic. We completely agree with the organizer's decision to cancel the event, and we are particularly torn up because this event meant something special to us - a homecoming to many of our old time music friends and a rare treat of a live concert from Red Tail Ring in this time when we are filling our creative careers with many projects.

In light of this news, Red Tail Ring wants to present a live streamed concert this Friday evening as a way to send out the energy that we intended to give to the music community in the Baltimore area.

After some consideration, we've decided to make this a free, donation-based event that anyone can plug into if they need or want to. Please consider making a donation of a ticket price if you feel moved by what we are creating, via links we’ll share at the event. We'll make the streaming links available in this space, as well as our other places (website, instagram). Laurel is also considering organizing a banjo workshop live stream this weekend to replace her scheduled events at the BOTMF. Stay tuned for more details about that, and chime in if it’s something you’d be interested in.
