Red Tail Ring

We are delighted to be touring in Southeast US in just a few days. We’ll be traveling to some spots that we’ll fallen in love with on past visits, and we’ll be discovering some new places. This tour brings us to several historical theaters that we’ll be honored to share our music in.

This past winter, we spent a few joyful days recording traditional and original American fiddle music with our stringband quartet – Bowhunter. Sam Cooper and Sam Herman, fellow Michiganders, lend their fiddle and banjo to complete this four piece dance band. From those sessions emmerged fresh arrangements of old chestnut tunes, debut recordings of some new instrumental compositions, and a lot of laughter and joy. The album was recorded live, and there are a few tracks during which band-mates had to switch instruments mid-song that the careful listener can try and pick out.

In the spirit of the sessions, we also included some commentary and joke telling, that hopefully can help you feel like you were there with us. If you’re into the most traditional corners of Red Tail Ring, you’ll truly enjoy this rare release, the first 500 copies of which are hand screenprinted and letterpressed by Laurel Premo.

This month we’ll also be opening up a pair of special shows with May Erlewine as she celebrates the release of her new album “Where We Are.” Laurel was featured on the recording as part of the supporting crew of musicians, and she’ll be performing on fiddle and banjo with May all weekend, with concerts in Kalamazoo (6/19) and Traverse City (6/22), as well as the shows that Red Tail Ring is opening for below:  Posted 6/4/14

We are so pleased to release the 7″ vinyl collaboration that we’ve been working on this past year with our dear friends, Lindsay Lou & Flatbellys. The album features both bands jamming as a supergroup, and interpretations of each other’s tunes. We’ve called the piece “The New Roots Exchange Volume I” and hope that there are many more collabs to come.
